Hazlehurst Junction from the West at Denford

Calden Canal and Bridge 35 at Denford, Leek, Staffordshire

This image was taken at 1:20 pm on 21st September 2025 and developed from a single RAW file with On1 Photo RAW 2026.

I'd actually taken an exposure-bracketed set, but tree foliage movement proved to be problematic with the HDR composite. Fortunately, the full dynamic range was available in the middle bracket.

Location

Gill and I have walked a circular route along the towpaths of the Calden canal network at Denford, near Leek in Staffordshire, for many years. And we sometimes have lunch in the canal side Hollybush Inn.

I usually photograph bridge 35 close and wide from the other side facing west on the Leek Branch. But this time, I wanted to try something different.

So this image was shot at 28mm (APS-C) looking east from the Caldon main line. Using a mid focal length allowed me to feature the cadence of the mooring stumps along the towpath as a lead-in line whilst giving the bridge a main-subject-worthy proportion of the frame.
